The Rugged Industrial environment introduces elements that require special features in order for these scanners to survive or perform long term. These include weather conditions such as rain, cold, extreme heat, or direct sunlight. Other factors can include ambient conditions such as dust, chemical exposure, or simply heavy use on a fork lift in a manufacturing environment.
In terms of scanning, these devices are similar to the Retail – Light Industrial scanners as they are simple input devices – scanning “work-in-process” labels, rack or bin labels, and pallet / carton labels. Communication in this environment is typically radio-frequency (RF) or Wifi with some Bluetooth or even batch capture (meaning information is stored in the scanner for download once connected to a PC).
